Backyard Paver Patio Installation in Washington, DC

Scope of Work
Project Overview
A homeowner in Washington, DC reached out to us because they wanted to replace their gravel covered backyard with a cleaner, more usable paver patio. The existing space had loose gray gravel, debris, stepping stones, and areas that were no longer functioning well as a finished outdoor surface.
The plan was to remove the gravel and debris, repair the erosion issue along the fence line, and install a new paver patio across roughly 760 square feet of backyard space. The design also included mulch bed openings for future planting and a smoother transition between the new patio and the gravel area outside the rear gate.

Site Conditions
The Property and Site Conditions
The old backyard was covered in gray gravel with loose materials scattered throughout the space. Sticks, railroad ties, loose lumber, stepping stones, and other discarded materials had to be cleared before installing the paver patio.
A section along the left-hand side of the fence had visible soil erosion where dirt had washed out beneath the fence line. That gap needed to be leveled and reinforced before the new patio edge could be finished cleanly.
The rear gate and gravel driveway also needed attention. The gravel outside the gate had been displaced by vehicle traffic and needed to be cleaned up.

What We Did
Backyard Demolition and Site Cleanup
Before installation, we removed the existing gray gravel from the backyard patio area and hauled it away. We also cleared loose debris from the site, including sticks, railroad ties, loose lumber, and stepping stones.
Once the yard was cleared, we prepared the full patio footprint for the new surface. This included the main backyard area, the space in front of the rear gate, the area around the rear stairs, and the open section to the left of the stairs.
Fence-Line Erosion Repair
Before installing the patio, we needed to address the erosion gap beneath the left-hand side of the fence. The area was leveled and graded so the new edge would sit more cleanly against the fence line.
We installed a 6-inch-high concrete footer to help create a stronger border under the fence. This gave the patio a cleaner edge and helped prevent further erosion.
Paver Base and Patio Installation
After the cleanup and fence line work were complete, we built the patio base using compacted CR6 stone dust. This gave the new pavers a stable surface across the backyard layout.
The client selected the paver stones before installation so the finished patio matched their preferred look. We then installed the pavers across the remaining backyard area, including the space from the rear gate through the main patio zone.
Mulch Beds, Gravel Regrading, and Final Cleanup
After the patio was installed, we left four mulch bed openings within the layout for future planting. These included one near the stairs and additional planting areas within the main patio footprint, including spots near the side and rear portions of the yard.
Next, we cleaned the gravel area just outside the rear driveway gate. The displaced stones were swept up and collected into bags, while some gravel was retained and redistributed to create a gentle grade into the new patio.
The final step was blending the gravel-to-paver transition so the rear gate area remained functional and easier to move through. This left the homeowner with a cleaner backyard surface, defined planting areas, and a more finished patio layout.
