Scope of Work

Project Overview

The property has a stepped garden landscape built into tiers, and over the winter the beds had filled up with leaves, sticks, and other debris. The homeowner wanted a seasonal cleanup to clear everything out, tidy up the plantings, and reset the bed lines before the spring growth came in.

We cleaned out the accessible tiers, pruned and weeded the beds, and finished by installing fresh hardwood mulch across the areas we serviced. The lower tiers were left as they were per the plan, so the work focused on the upper beds and the areas along the perimeter and the base.

Site Conditions

The Property and Site Conditions

The garden is laid out in tiers that step up from the base, with ornamental grasses and perimeter plantings throughout. Since the beds had gone through winter without a cleanup, leaves and organic debris had collected on the upper tiers and settled along the bottom sections near the tall grasses.

Spring bulbs were already coming up when we started, which meant the cleanup had to be done carefully around the emerging growth. The plan called for leaving the lowest tiers untouched, so we worked around that and concentrated on the sections that needed attention.

ASSESsMENT

What We Did

We started by blowing out and removing the leaves and debris piled up on the upper tiers, then cleared the sticks and loose material from the base of the beds and along the tall grasses. From there we pulled the weeds and took out the dead plant material, leaving the healthy growth alone. We cut back the plants that had crept into the beds to bring the lines back and gave the tall ornamental grass on the right side a light trim.

The spring bulbs were already sprouting, so we worked around them so they wouldn’t get damaged. We left the forsythias for later, since they prune best right after they finish blooming in mid-April. Once the beds were cleaned up, we laid down natural brown hardwood mulch across everything we’d worked on, spread evenly to hold moisture, keep weeds down, and give the beds a clean edge.
