Scope of Work
Project Overview
The homeowner wanted a full makeover on their front yard in Washington, DC. The yard needed a complete cleanup and the front beds had reached the point where the old mulch and landscape fabric were doing more harm than good.
We cleaned up the entire front property, removed weeds by the root, edged, and mulched the front beds with brown dyed hardwood mulch. Next, we also converted two mulch bed sections into lawn with tall fescue sod. The result is a simpler, cleaner front yard with less bed area to maintain.

The Property and Site Conditions
The landscape beds ran along the front and sides of the house and next to the brick walkway and sidewalk. They held a mix of established shrubs, ornamental grasses, and weeds, with old mulch and deteriorated black landscape fabric sitting exposed on the surface.
Two bed areas were set for removal. One sat on the left side of the property between a hydrangea and a green shrub, and the other ran along the green hedge on the right side of the walkway. Together, the conversion covered roughly 280 square feet of new sod.

What We Did
We cleaned up the front yard of this brick home in Washington, DC. The work included pulling weeds by the root to prevent regrowth, clearing leaves, landscape debris, and minor trash. We also pruned the plants, shrubs, and trees without damaging them, using tools we disinfect between jobs to avoid spreading diseases like blight. Everything we removed got hauled away and recycled.
Next, we converted two old mulch beds into an extension of the existing lawn. On the left side of the property, we removed the bed between the hydrangea and the green shrub. We pulled out all the mulch and landscape fabric, closed off the area, and worked compost into the soil to get it ready for grass. On the right side of the walkway, we removed the entire bed along the green hedge, including all existing vegetation by the roots, then prepped that soil the same way. With both areas ready, we installed tall fescue sod. Since the old fabric and mulch are gone, and the homeowner now has two clean sections of lawn where the old beds used to be.
With the sod installed, we turned to the beds closer to the home. We edged each one, laid down fresh landscape fabric, and topped them with brown dyed hardwood mulch. When adding mulch, it’s important to use clean mulch and spread it evenly. This matters because it helps the beds hold moisture, keeps weeds down, and gives the whole front yard a clean look.
