Composite Deck Installation in Alexandria, VA

Scope of Work
Project Overview
The homeowner wanted to replace an aging pressure-treated wood deck that had begun to show structural wear while creating a more functional outdoor living area. Rather than rebuilding the deck with the same footprint, the project included expanding its size to provide additional usable space and updating the materials with lower-maintenance products.
The new deck was built using Trex composite decking with white PVC railings and black aluminum balusters for a clean appearance and long-term durability. As part of the renovation, the surrounding backyard was also prepared for future patio improvements by converting the area beneath the deck into a properly drained gravel base.

Site Conditions
The Property and Site Conditions
The existing deck occupied a relatively small footprint and limited how the backyard could be used. Because the new layout extended beyond the original structure, several existing site features had to be relocated before construction could begin.
The air conditioning condenser sat within the new deck footprint and needed to be moved closer to the house. The electrical breaker box also had to be relocated onto the brick wall to maintain safe access after the new deck was installed.
Underneath the existing deck, pavers covered the ground surface. Since that area would no longer function as a patio, the pavers were removed and saved for reuse elsewhere in the backyard while the space was converted to a gravel drainage area.

What We Did
We began by demolishing and removing the existing pressure-treated wood deck to prepare the site for new construction. Once the structure was cleared, we laid out the expanded footprint and completed the framing for the larger deck.
Before installation, we relocated the air conditioning condenser against the house so it would remain accessible without interfering with the new deck. The electrical breaker box was also remounted to the brick wall, allowing safe access after construction was complete.
The new deck was finished with Trex composite decking, white PVC railings, and black aluminum balusters. We also installed two GFCI electrical outlets on the deck railing to provide convenient power for outdoor lighting, cooking equipment, or other backyard uses.
Beneath the deck, the existing pavers were carefully removed and set aside for reuse during the patio renovation. The area was then graded with gravel and stone dust to improve drainage and create a clean, low-maintenance surface below the deck.
The completed project gave the homeowner a larger outdoor living space while replacing aging materials with products designed for lower maintenance and longer service life.
