Natural Flagstone Walkway & Cedar Gate Installation in Bethesda, MD

Scope of Work

Project Overview

The homeowner wanted to improve a narrow side yard that had become difficult to use because of bare soil, uneven ground, and limited access between the front and back of the property. The project also included replacing the existing gate with a wider cedar gate that provided easier entry while matching the surrounding fence.

To create a cleaner and more durable walkway, we installed a natural flagstone path set within a river rock bed. The new layout provides a defined walking surface while helping move water away from the home’s foundation. We finished the project by installing a custom cedar double gate with new hardware for smoother everyday use and better access to the backyard.

Site Conditions

The Property and Site Conditions

Before construction, the side yard consisted primarily of exposed soil with noticeable elevation changes between the house and the fence. The area collected debris from previous construction work and offered no dedicated walking path, making it difficult to move through the space during wet weather.

Because the walkway runs alongside the home’s foundation, drainage was an important part of the project. Existing utility lines, downspouts, and drainage piping also required careful planning before excavation began.

The entrance to the backyard was another area that needed attention. The existing gate no longer provided the width or function the homeowner wanted, so the new design needed to improve access while fitting within the existing fence line.

What We Did

Site Preparation and Grading

The project began after another contractor removed excess soil from the side yard. We fine-graded the area to create consistent elevations and prepare the space for the new hardscape. Because this section of the property sits alongside the home’s foundation, proper grading was an important first step to help move water away from the house and create a stable base for the new materials.

Once the grading was complete, we installed landscape fabric throughout the side yard to separate the soil from the stone base and reduce future weed growth before any gravel or stone was placed.

River Rock Drainage Installation

With the site prepared, we installed approximately 14 tons of 3- to 5-inch river rock throughout the side yard. Rather than using mulch or groundcover plants, the homeowner chose a river rock system to improve drainage and reduce maintenance.

We also modified the existing downspouts by capping the underground PVC connections and installing new white PVC elbows that direct roof runoff into the gravel beds. This allows water to disperse across the stone surface instead of collecting next to the foundation.

The finished river rock bed creates a clean appearance while helping control erosion and standing water in an area that previously consisted of exposed soil.

Natural Flagstone Walkway and Patio

After completing the drainage work, we installed 28 full-color natural flagstone stepping stones to create a defined walkway connecting the side yard to the backyard. Each stone was carefully positioned to provide comfortable spacing while following the natural flow of the property.

Adjacent to the basement entrance, we also built a full-color natural flagstone patio measuring approximately 15 feet by 4 feet. The patio was constructed on a reinforced concrete base using steel rebar and wire mesh to provide long-term stability and support.

To maintain proper clearance below the basement door, the finished patio elevation was designed to sit several inches below the threshold while still providing easy access to the new outdoor living area.

Trex Landing and Backyard Access

Near the basement entrance, we poured a concrete landing that serves as the base for a Trex platform. This landing creates a durable transition from the house to the new patio and provides convenient access to the area planned for the homeowner’s future hot tub.

Together, the landing, patio, and stepping stone walkway create a continuous path that is easier to navigate and better suited for everyday use than the original dirt side yard.

Cedar Gate Installation and Fence Repair

To complete the project, we installed a custom cedar double gate with new hinges and latch hardware, giving the homeowner a wider and more functional entrance to the backyard. The natural cedar complements the existing fencing while providing smoother operation and improved access for equipment and routine yard maintenance.

Several months later, we returned to repair one section of the existing fence by replacing a damaged horizontal 2×4 rail and resetting the gate hardware so it would close and latch correctly.
