Concrete Side Yard Walkway Installation in Ellicott City, MD

Scope of Work
Project Overview
The homeowner wanted a more durable and easier-to-maintain walkway connecting the front of the house to the backyard patio area. The existing pathway along the side yard had become uneven and overgrown in several sections, making the transition between the front and back of the property feel less clean and less practical for everyday use.
To improve access, we installed a new broom-finished concrete walkway running along the left side of the home and continuing toward the backyard patio. The finished walkway created a cleaner connection between the front entry area and the backyard while giving the side yard a more finished appearance overall.

The Property and Site Conditions
The project took place along a narrow side yard between the house and existing landscaping beds. Part of the original pathway consisted of decorative stepping stones and paver sections that had grass and weeds growing between them. Some areas around the path also showed signs of uneven ground and patchy lawn growth.
The new walkway layout needed to work around the existing gate access, landscaping borders, and patio connection in the backyard. The path began near the front walkway, extended down the side of the house, then turned toward the rear patio area for a total length of approximately 57 linear feet.
Because the walkway passed through a long side-yard corridor, proper grading and reinforcement were important to help create a stable surface and a consistent finish from front to back.

What We Did
We started by clearing and preparing the walkway area along the side of the property. After laying out the new path, we prepared the subgrade and installed reinforcement throughout the walkway using steel rebar and wire mesh to help strengthen the concrete over the full run of the installation.
Once the forms were set, we poured the new concrete walkway in sections and added clean control joints throughout the path to help manage expansion and cracking over time. The finished surface received a broom texture to improve traction while also giving the walkway a clean, uniform appearance.
The completed walkway now provides a direct connection from the front walkway to the backyard patio while fitting naturally alongside the existing landscaping and side-yard layout. The lighter concrete finish also brightened the narrow side area and created a cleaner transition through the property.
