Front Door Replacement in Washington, DC

Scope of Work
Project Overview
The homeowner wanted to replace the front entry door with something more durable and better sealed. The goal was a door that could stand up to the weather while keeping water and drafts from getting inside. We removed the old door and hardware and installed a new commercial-grade fiberglass door, hung and framed to fit the existing opening.
The new door has six glass panels, which lets more light into the entry while keeping the front of the house looking clean and finished. We also added new hardware and the home’s address numbers so everything matched once the work was done.

The Property and Site Conditions
The project was a direct replacement on an existing front entry. The opening was already in place, so the work centered on fitting the new pre-hung door into the rough opening and making sure it sat square and sealed.
A pre-hung fiberglass door comes mounted in its own frame, which gives a cleaner, tighter fit than trying to rework an old frame. We used a 36 by 80 inch door set into a 44 by 89 inch rough opening, which gave us room to shim, level, and seal the unit properly.
The main goal was a door that closed correctly, locked securely, and kept out drafts and water. Fiberglass holds up well to DC’s mix of hot summers and wet winters without warping or rotting the way some older doors do.

What We Did
Before any installation, we removed and disposed of the old door and hardware so the opening was clear and ready for the new unit.
During installation, we set the pre-hung fiberglass door into the rough opening, shimmed and leveled it, and checked the swing and alignment. We then installed the new hardware set, a handle, lockset, and deadbolt, and mounted the homeowner’s address numbers on the door.
After the door was in, we handled the finish work: trim casing, paint, and weatherproof sealing around the frame. We checked the fit one more time to confirm the door opened, closed, and locked the way it should, with no gaps around the edges.
