Wrought Iron Stair Railing Installation in Gaithersburg, MD

Scope of Work
Project Overview
The homeowner wanted to upgrade the exterior steps leading from the back entry down to the patio with a cleaner and more durable railing setup. The old vinyl railing sat away from the stair structure, so it did not feel fully connected to the steps or the surrounding stonework.
We installed four individual black powder-coated wrought iron, U-shaped railings along the stair run. The new railings were added as convenience handholds for everyday use, giving the stair area a cleaner and more usable layout without changing the existing patio structure.

The Property and Site Conditions
The project took place on an existing stone stair area connected to the patio. Since the stairs, wall, and hardscape were already in place, the railing layout had to work with the current structure instead of changing the stair design.
The previous vinyl railing was positioned several inches away from the steps, leaving a gap between the handhold and the stair edge. For the new installation, the railings needed to be mounted directly along the side of each step, which meant some side areas had to be filled in to create a flatter and more secure mounting surface.
Some areas around the stone and pointing also needed attention so the new installation would sit cleaner against the existing structure. Addressing those spots helped the finished railings feel like part of the stair design instead of something added on afterward.

What We Did
Before installation, we removed and disposed of the old vinyl railing so the stair area could be prepared for the new layout. This opened up the side of the steps and allowed us to plan the railing placement closer to the actual stair structure.
During installation, we filled in the side areas of the steps where needed so the railings could be mounted properly. We then placed four individual U-shaped wrought iron railings along the exterior steps, side-mounted each piece into the stair structure, and checked the spacing and alignment from top to bottom.
After installation, the new railings were connected directly to the steps instead of sitting off to the side like the old vinyl railing. The black powder-coated finish paired well with the stone stairs and surrounding hardscape, giving the back entry a cleaner and more intentional look.
